Ardmore appointed to deliver landmark Town Hall and Civic Campus for Hammersmith & Fulham

Tue 19th Mar 2024

Ardmore has been appointed by Hammersmith & Fulham Council and their JV partners A2Dominion, as their delivery partner for Hammersmith Civic Campus, a major new mixed-use development in West London.

Construction has already begun on the £155m main contract, which will see Ardmore refurbish and extend the existing Grade II-listed Town Hall building to provide over 15,000 sqm of state of the art office and public space, alongside delivering 204 new homes and over 10,000sqm of commercial space.

The refurbishment of the existing Town Hall is at the heart of the Civic Campus scheme. Alongside the sensitive interventions to existing heritage elements, Ardmore are creating an additional 4,500sqm internal area within a contemporary three-storey ‘Glass Box’ extension.

Comprising 1,300 tonnes of structural steel, the new ‘Glass Box’ sits above the existing Town Hall, supported on a series of 15-metre-high stilts that punch down through the existing building and courtyard, bridging over a major sewer that runs beneath the building. The newly enclosed courtyard provides additional internal space for a new glazed scenic lift and link bridges, opening up the existing building and provide new connections.

As well as incorporating cutting-edge environmental technology, the Civic Campus is set to become one of the most accessible series of buildings anywhere in the world. Building on the extensive engagement carried out through early project stages with local stakeholders like the independent Disabled People’s Commission, Ardmore’s team will apply their delivery expertise to ensure the development provides a world-class accessibility offer.

The scheme is being delivered through a joint venture partnership between H&F Council and A2Dominion. A2Dominion is a residential property group with a social purpose, providing high-quality new homes to meet a wide range of needs.

Cormac Byrne, Ardmore’s Managing Director, said:

“We are excited to take on the delivery of West King Street. To secure the project after extensive pre-construction negotiations, amidst a backdrop of significant uncertainty surrounding the COVID pandemic, underlines the determination of all parties to secure cost and delivery certainty.

“Having delivered some of London’s most complex listed-building refurbishment and residential regeneration projects, we were able to develop practical, cost-effective solutions to help unlock this challenging project.

“We’re looking forward to working closely with the Council, A2Dominion and local residents to deliver a truly landmark scheme that will help transform Hammersmith for generations to come.”

Nick Hutchings, Executive Director (MD, Commercial), A2Dominion said:

“Having worked with Ardmore on a number of occasions, we already have a strong relationship and the utmost respect for their work.

“This is a high-quality and inclusive scheme, with world-leading accessibility that has already won an award for its design. We now can’t wait for Ardmore to deliver the build and make these exciting plans a reality.”
