Ardmore starts work at iconic redevelopment of Southwark Fire Station

Thu 28th Mar 2024

We have recently been awarded the £85million main contract to redevelop the former Southwark Fire Station, into a major mixed-use development which has been branded as Brigade Court. Brigade Court is the first development in the new joint venture vehicle between Goldman Sachs International and Urbanwise Developments.

The plans include a comprehensive refurbishment of the Grade II listed former fire station, Headquarters, museum and training facility originally built in 1777, alongside the development of a 10-storey residential building to create 199 new apartments, commercial space and a new school to house 1,150 students.

A new 10,700 sqm secondary school with a sixth form, designed by Peter Taylor Associates, sensitively blends tradition with the cutting-edge expertise, incorporating space within the existing fire station as well as a new building that is being constructed using pre-fabricated off-site modular technology.

On the adjacent Grotto site, we are also delivering a 15,600 sqft sports centre with a multi-use games area and outdoor artificial pitch for use by both the school and local community.

We recently started construction work on the scheme with an estimated completion in Q2 2021. The school is due to open in Q3 2020.

The appointment builds on our extensive experience in the London residential and mixed-use sector, following the recent completion of Canada Water and Sutton Point.

Patrick Byrne, Ardmore’s Managing Director, said:

“We are delighted to be working with Goldman Sachs International and Urbanwise on this significant scheme, which promises to provide a new and iconic landmark for Southwark.

“Our appointment on the job underlines our ability to de-risk complex projects, combining our extensive experience of major heritage refurbishment and unlocking logistically challenging new build schemes.”

Keith Ewart, Urbanwise’s Managing Director, said:

“The JV is excited to be working with Ardmore on our first joint development. Ardmore’s approach, together with their considerable experience in the delivery of major mixed use, residential developments is already proving significant in driving the development forward”
