Goodenough College

A major refurbishment and sensitive intervention of the partly Grade II listed William Goodenough College to provide over 500 high-specification private student rooms and suites, alongside extensive front and back of house facilities over two phases.

Phase I comprised :

  • adding a two storey extension to create 54 high-quality single rooms with private bathrooms and two studio flats;
  • adding private bathrooms to existing single rooms;
  • reconfiguring accommodation to add 20 studio flats and 10 rooms;
  • creating a new garden courtyard and terrace; and
  • modernizing the reception and common areas to make them accessible.

Phase II involved the refurbishment of the Grade II Listed London House comprising student accommodation: 9 flats & 299 study bedrooms with associated shared facilities.

The College had not undergone any major infrastructure work since opening its doors over 80 years ago. Goodenough College wanted to refurbish and update its accommodation in order to provide members with contemporary facilities to meet the needs of multi-national postgraduate students and their families.

Both London House and Goodenough College involved refurbishment of the building fabric and the complete renewal of the building services, with the addition of new facilities, while keeping the unique character of these important heritage buildings. The Great Hall, the Parsons Library and the Chapel were restored to their former glory.
