Virginia Quay, London Docklands

This final phase project designed by RMA completed a larger residential scheme. It included the delivery of strategic non-residential space including a nursery, a convenience store and a new park for the growing community. An initial public consultation session on site revealed a desperate demand for some quality play space for younger children. A full day consultation workshop was organised where local children explored their ideas for the park. This included model-making and brainstorming sessions managed with the client and landscape architect.

The completed park is the focus for local children and demonstrates the value of their input. This modern block responds to this accessible site next to East India DLR, with a complete facade of inset balconies enjoying a view of the park to the east. Residents to the West enjoy views of the Canary Wharf Skyline and city beyond. The angle of the block sits parallel to the Meridian Line. Modulation of the massing of both the West and North elevations breaks down the scale of the building to relate to the existing streetscape of the development. Its sharp angled prow creates a landmark gesture that provides spectacular views of the Thames and Greenwich in the distance.
