Topping Out Ceremony

We’ve marked a proud milestone at our Britannia project in Hackney, with the topping out of the first affordable housing block.

This achievement sees structural works complete on the largest of two affordable blocks within the wider development, where we’re delivering 371 new homes, including 81 for council rent and shared ownership, across four buildings for Hackney Council.

Fittingly, the two affordable blocks will be named after Joy Mack and Gene Rondo, two of the British reggae artists behind the 1985 British Reggae Artists Famine Appeal (BRAFA). Their work, including the single Let’s Make Africa Green Again and a benefit concert held just across the road in Shoreditch Park, mobilised thousands in support of famine-hit Ethiopia.

To celebrate the milestone, we were joined on site by Mayor Caroline Woodley, members of the project delivery team, and relatives of both the Joy Mack and Gene Rondo families.

As a Hackney-based contractor, this was an especially meaningful event for Ardmore, one that not only celebrates construction progress, but also honours the community spirit that has helped to shape this part of London as much as the buildings themselves.

Now, almost 40 years on, that legacy lives on in new homes being built for local families, right on the edge of Shoreditch Park.
